Houston, TX -
Police are asking the public for help in tracking down the thieves who broke into an evidence holding facility and made off with over 500 pounds of cocaine early Saturday morning.
Drug Enforcement Agents and other local officers had seized the cocaine in an extravagent drug bust a few days ago. 10 people were arrested in connection with that bust.
The D.E.A. brought the confiscated cocaine and other evidence to the holding facility as they do with any other case. When officers went to retrieve the evidence, they found the cocaine was missing.
An immediate investigation was started and officers discovered that someone had pried open one of the doors and was able to enter the building undetected. Dogs were brought in but could not pick up any scents.
Police canvased the area surrounding the building, questioning the people about anything they might know. So far no leads have turned up.
Due to the theft, the Drug Enforcement Agency will review its policy on where they store evidence.
There are plans to upgrade the security in this facility as a result of this incident.
